“From Restoration to Digitization, Edition and Computational Research: P.Bas. 2 and d-scribes projects in Basel” with T. Hügli

Sixth Papyrus Curatorial and Conservation Meeting

Abstract: The presentation will illustrate how, at Basel University, curators from the University Library, Digitization experts from the Digital Humanities Lab and papyrologists from the Ancient History Department have collaborated since September 2015 in order to use state of the art methods to produce new editions of the whole papyrus collection in P.Bas.2. A zoom on restoration work will be given. A second project, d-scribes, started in 2018 and investigates how Computational Analysis of Handwritings can contribute to classify scripts and identify writers on papyri. The presentation will show how Document Analysis experts use digital images provided by the collections as prime research material.
